our survival kit

i've been planning in my head some posts that i wanted to write here. one being about reflux and doing your best to survive it. another being a popular topic with all new moms which is baby essentials. as i started to work on them, i realized that my two topics were easily meshing into one. for me, they went hand in hand and all of the items were essential to us with a new baby in the house, who just so happens to have horrible reflux as well.

i scoured the web many, many times, day and night, looking to read and hopefully learn from other people's experiences in dealing with all things reflux. so i thought i would put my two cents out there for other moms who might be doing the same.

a quickie reminder on hadley's story- from the day she was born, we knew hadley had reflux. she gagged and made a funny sound when laying flat on her back. i can remember the husband and i crying in the hospital, freaking out that she was going to choke something fierce and we wouldn't know it until it was too late. it would be virtually impossible to have an eye on her 24 hours a day. we were so sleepless. we had two of the neonatal nursery nurses come in to speak with us, trying to assure us that they would watch hadley for a few hours while we tried to get a little sleep. we were so distrusting and fearful of what could happen. that is where it started. and everyone knows what a long road it has been for poor hadley in dealing with her reflux. she is here and despite living with devil that is reflux on a daily basis, hadley is everything one could ask for in a daughter. she is an angel and a blessing to us.

so to get her from birth to now, a few essentials were needed.

aden & anais muslin swaddling blankets

i can't even tell you just how versatile these blankets are. just a few of the things i used them for are: swaddling (obviously, right), as a cover up when i was breast feeding, as a burp cloth because you know she had a lot of spit up coming out of her nose for months, as a changing pad cover, and simply as a light weight blanket during naps. these things are awesome. awesome i tell you. great for a baby gift if you are looking for some ideas.

if i wasn't being so lazy right now i would go back and move this item to #1 on my list because it was a life saver for 7 months. that's right people, 7 months! i will say we did use the nap nanny in conjunction with this at first but if i would have known how great the rnp would have been, i would have saved myself $130 and skipped the nap nanny. the rnp was used after feedings to keep hadley elevated, as well as for naps and bed time. it kept her upright at a 30 degree angle, which is so so important, and held her in quite snugly. no bells and whistles here.  simple elevation is key. she even had this to sleep in her first 4 months at daycare. life. saver. for. sure.

wearing a reflux baby is so beneficial. not only does it keep her elevated(super important, i think you are getting that point by now), it keeps her close to you which i think is essential to a baby who doesn't feel well. nothing comforts them like mommy can. this wrap was ultra comfortable to wear and i am pretty sure given the number of naps taken in it that is was also comfortable to be carried in. it just positioned hadley in a way that her stomach wasn't all bunched up, which would have made her reflux worse.  i'll be honest and say it took me a few tries when learning how to get it on but once i got it, i got it. easy peasy. this was, for the first 5 months, the only carrier i would use.

this started out as a long paragraph about how i couldn't breast feed after week 6.  i decided to just sum it up and say that when hadley was put on her special formula, we used these bottles and still do. love them, despite the extra two pieces most bottles don't have. they are really easy on her easily irritated digestive system. even at 13 mos, she is still on low flow #2 nipples. fast flow ones were also a reflux irritant. highly recommend these.

mylanta cherry supreme

what? an adult antacid on the list? sure is. and it works wonders. hadley started using this as a break through fix in between prevacid doses. it gave her immediate relief. the cherry supreme is the only one that does not contain aluminum so it is safe for her to use. she still uses is on really bad days. she welcomes it.

can you write a post about baby essentials without dropping the carter's name? i say no. you can only imagine how many onesies a refluxing baby goes through on a daily basis. well actually, with mine, not many as she was/is a silent refluxer. but still... many refluxing babies are pretty messy. love carter's onesies. this was hadley's wardrobe for months 1-3. plus, they work great with those monthly stickers i used on her.

hard to believe any baby could have a reaction to aveeno. they are supposed to be the best hypoallergenic brand, right. sadly hadley did have a horrible reaction to it which sent her to the er. so now the only thing that touches her baby soft skin is aquaphor's baby wash. it works perfectly for her and i don't see us changing any time soon. it is so gentle and smells so squeaky clean. even big sister caroline uses it as a bodywash.

this was a gift to hadley from her sweet aunt melissa. i loved the idea of it initially but in the end, loved the reality of it. when hadley was about 8 weeks or so i really wanted to try getting her on a nightly schedule. i knew this was important for her but would also benefit me when going back to work. the schedule was implemented and we stuck to it. still do. bath-book-bottle-bed. flawless right. well this sweet night light was part of that routine. hadley still loves when we turn it on at night. the glowing blue moon and stars all over her walls and ceiling are a key identifier that bedtime is imminent.

and lastly, the car seat. the infant carriers just never worked for sweet hads. the position the seat put her in scrunched her little tummy up too much and she refluxed every time as soon as i put her in it. it only took a few uses to realize she just wasn't comfortable. so we quickly moved her into her britax convertible. of course it isn't as convenient as the infant carrier but she was way more comfortable, and that was most important to us. she is still in this seat and will be for a few years. safety and comfort first, right.

there you have it. some great things that i would recommend for a healthy or gerd baby.

her quarters

i am so happy with the end results. i think even the husband, who was once doubtful of the grey, is happy with the nursery. hopefully little baby girl will love it too!

my mom recovered the rocker for me, which when i used it with sweet cheeks was pink and green. it is such a comfy chair so i am so glad she was able to recover it in the pink damask fabric.

i absolutely love the book ledges. they brought a lot of color to the room. plus, i love that all of the books once belonged to big sister sweet cheeks. and how cute is the little sophie & lili doll on the shelf. isn't she adorable.

i ordered the sweet dreams banner from my baby sam.

the elephant bin by 3 sprouts will be great for her toys but for now it is blanket storage.

the garden blossom elephant in the crib is from dwell. the crib sheet is also by dwell, mini dots in grey. i decided to not use a crib bumper this go around. crib skirt was a freebie from work.

the doll house book shelf was sweet cheeks. it didn't fit in her room after the room make-over so luckily it works just great in the nursery.

the changing table is an ikea hemnes dresser. the pink zinnia knobs are from anthropologie.

the cute pink and gray fabric cat was made by a girl i work with. the little white chair is ikea kritter. hanging on the closet is a pink "little sister" tee.

so there you have it. the nursery for my second daughter!

i am getting so excited to put the room to use.

break on through to the other side

the nursery is finished! yippee. i will post pics of it later this week.

i did want to show you the amazingly special touch that the husband added to both girl's rooms. it is a tunnel! since the room's closets shared a wall, he just went in, cut a hole in the wall, and created a unique tunnel for them to go through. the trim needs to be painted and carpet installed along the inside but it is still functional in the meantime. sweet cheeks and the dogs already make good use of it.

sweet cheeks coming back into her room from her sisters room

and the view from little sister's room looking into sweet cheek's room. half of sweet cheek's closet was transformed into a mini reading space. we just put a bucket of books, bean bag chair, and some pillows in it to create a little reading room.

one step at a time

the nursery.... well it is coming along slowly but surely. i should feel rushed with only 8 weeks to go but strangely i don't feel that way. i am probably more relaxed about it than i should be. i guess going into it i didn't quite realize how much work we had cut out for ourselves with this room. and when i say "we," you know i am mainly referring to the husband. he had his work cut out for him with all the projects i wanted done. what a great relationship right.. i have the ideas and he does the work. he has gotten so much completed already. i'll point out everything in a future completed nursery post. the only other main projects i need him to still do is finish painting the closet and hang 3 ledges for me. once those are done, i can start moving everything in and decorate. the fun part!

he changed out an ugly brown ceiling fan for this ikea leran pendant light

i started washing all of her tiny clothes and putting them in her dresser, which is an ikea hemnes
we are getting there.

can't wait to share pics of something special that the husband did for sweet cheeks and her baby sister!

31 weeks...

how far along: 31 weeks

weight gained: 18 lbs (this time around with sweet cheeks i had gained 19 lbs, funny how close the two pregnancies are)

maternity clothes: yup and those are even starting to feel small. my belly is quite round and my shirts feel like they are barely covering it.

stretch marks: yippy! NO!!!

belly button in: nope. i have 100% lost my belly button. can't find it anywhere.

baby movement: definitely. i feel her all the time. she is quite the gymnast. it often feels like either her elbow or her heel is coming out of my side. kind of strange feeling. the husband got to feel it the other night too. makes me wonder what position she is in.

cravings: yoohoo and chocolate eclair ice cream bars. yummy! explains the 18 lbs i guess.

aversions: still the same restaurant... just the smell of it.

next appt: monday, mar 7th

update from last appt: the doc i saw isn't my fav. she made me feel rushed. i had my gestational diabetes test and my antibody test, both of which came back fine. this doctor went ahead and scheduled my c-section for april 25th. i am hoping to avoid a c-section all together. i am going to ask my (favorite) doctor at this coming appt if they will at least push the c-section date off until may 2nd, as i'd prefer it after my due date to give me the chance to go into labor naturally. we'll see what he says.

symptoms: currently i have a cold. blah. sleeping is still sporadic due to leg/foot cramps. and reflux... oh my gosh... the reflux!!! it is so horrible. i avoid bending over at all costs because of it.

nursery: it looks so beautiful. i already shared a pic of the new paint, which is gray on 3 walls and gray/white stripes on one wall. the nursery now has a crib, dresser(need to go get these knobs for it though from anthro), and table in it. i need to get a mattress for the crib. holy cow are there a lot to choose from. i feel overwhelmed every time i start researching the topic.

gear: i got an ergo baby sport carrier in blue. not the color i probably would have chosen, but babysteals.com had it one day for a great price so i had to take it. i have heard lots of good things about these carriers, so i hope baby girl and i both like it.

and finally my belly shots

big and round... i'm talking about my belly here!

the nursery... part one

once everything was finally moved out of the nursery, the painters came. i struggled with which color to paint the nursery since i was in favor of gray and the husband was in favor of pink. in the end, i won. well as far as the nursery goes. he won in that sweet cheek's room was painted pink (i'll share a pic of her new room soon).

i of course was much inspired by so many rooms on my favorite nursery blog, ohdeedoh. i know i shared some of those photos with you here. the gray we went with is benjamin moore stonington gray, mixed at lowe's with olympic no voc paint.

so here it is. the first photo of the nursery.

it's gotta start somewhere, right.

1.02.2011

the crib we're in

we took a trip to ikea.

it started out as a trip to buy the gulliver crib in white. after reading many reviews, i had decided that this crib was the way to go. not only was it cheap ($99) but it also received great ratings in consumer reports. plus, i read many other good things about it on my favorite website, ohdeedoh. it is easy to trust other parents, right. why would they lie.

once we got to ikea though, the husband liked the hensvik crib better. i could see his point as this crib converted easily into a cute toddler bed. i loved that he had an opinion regarding the crib, so i went with it and we took home the hensvik.

once we got home though and i began to read about the hensvik crib, i saw that it didn't rate near as well. nor did many of the comments i read on it sound as great. so i asked the husband if he would mind if we returned that crib back to ikea and went with the original plan of the gulliver. so that is just what we did. we returned the hensvik with the intentions of getting the white gulliver. of course, after the return, we went down the aisle to grab the gulliver, which was now a "last chance" buy at ikea for only $79, and they were out! i was already panicked. so i called ikea two days in a row waiting for their last 6 gullivers to come in. finally it did and sweet cheeks and i schlepped down on our own to ikea and bought that crib.

so yippy... baby girl now has a bed for sleeping in!
next on the list... a car seat and stroller!

first nursery purchase

my first purchase for the nursery!

not sure why i like these little wood animals from west elm but i do. i think i'll be using them as decor, not bookends. sweet cheeks is so excited to do the nursery. there is just so much work that goes into emptying a playroom/office first. i am not up for the task just yet but i am definitely putting my ideas together for what i want the room to look like. i love reading ohdeedoh right now for ideas. great inspiration there.
